The 30 share index,
BSE Sensex plunged 575.86 points, or 4.40%, to 12,526.32 in the week ended Oct.
03, 2008. On the other hand, the broad based NSE Nifty plunged 166.95 points, or
4.19%, to 3,818.30 in the same period.
Indian markets plummeted during the week mainly on account of global selling
pressures coupled with fall in commodity prices which slumped on concerns of
rising signs of global economic slowdown.
However, in the mid-week market recovered considerably, after getting assurance
from the finance minister P. Chidambaram that Indian Markets were `sound
and attractive`
The US Senate voting in
favor of the USD 700 billion financial rescue plan also failed to lift the
market morale.
The wholesale price index (WPI)
Inflation declined marginally to 11.99% for the week ended Sep. 20, 2008, as
compared to 12.14% in the week before.
Markets were closed on
Oct.2, 2008 on account of Gandhi Jayanti and Id-ul-Fitr.
Mid-cap stocks plunged 263.02 points, or 5.32%, to 4,677.80 in the week, while
small-cap shares plunged 396.38 points, or 6.76%, to 5,465.40 during the week.
Major gainers over the week
in the sectoral indices were FMCG which gained 0.41%, Auto rose 2.15%, PSU
climbed 2.49%, HC went up 2.73%, and TECk rose 3.85%.
BSE Metal dropped 11.42%,
Realty fell 7.43%, Oil & Gas lost 7.21%, Conusmer Durables declined
5.18%,and Capital Goods went down 5.15% among major losers in the sectoral
indices over the week.

Major gainers in
30-share index were State Bank Of India (3.29%), HDFC Bank (2.22%), ACC (1.85%),
Hindustan Unilever (1.45%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.03%), and Maruti Suzuki
India
(0.59%) over the week.
On the other hand Larsen
& Toubro (53.07%), Tata Steel (14.65%), Reliance Energy (11.50%), Sterlite
Industries (India) (11.50%), Tata Motors (11.41%), and Reliance Industries
(10.20%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex over the week.
